31192C.R A very attractive Victorian wall mounted regulator. The arched topped case has mahogany veneers and is glazed at the front and on both sides. The top which is arched has a strong moulding. The bottom of the case is finished with a concave shaped base in the style of a Vienna regulator. The brass and silvered arch dial is a particular feature. In the arch between two well cast spandrels is an aperture for a large round moon and around this is the signature plaque signed "Arthur Kinder Fecit aetat 72 1897" and above the moon is a quotation "Each day you see me turn about time fleeth and the lamp burns out." The main dial with a thin chapter ring and again with nicely cast spandrels in the corners is for the minutes and inside the minute ring are four applied silvered dials for seconds, hours and date. The eight day regulator movement has substantial pillars and plates. The pillars screwed into each plate with unusual screws employing tommy bars to tighten them. The clock has maintaining power and beat adjustment mounted on the top of the crutch. The clock employs a mercury jar pendulum. Length: 67" (170 cms.) |

Arthur Kinder
We have had a number of clocks by Arthur Kinder who we at first believed to be a gifted amateur horologist. However from the number of clocks we have seen we think that he was a clockmaker who made his clocks for resale. They are always of fine quality with some features that would suggest an engineering rather than a clockmaking background. The quality of his dials is fantastic and this clock is no exception. It could be that he turned to clockmaking as a second job after he retired as the clocks we have so far had have been from a relatively short period between 1890-1900.
A similar clock by Arthur Kinder dated 1899 is
illustrated in ‘Precision Pendulum Clocks,’ Derek Roberts Antiques
Exhibition Catalogue June 1986 and ‘English Precision Pendulum Clocks’ by
Derek Roberts page 271.
