ARCHIBALD JOHNSTON, LONDON.A FINE MAHOGANY CASED ENGLISH REGULATOR .CIRCA 1790

A fine George III mahogany longcase regulator with a beautifully figured case of a lovely rich colour. It has a flat topped breakarch to the hood which is canted and reeded on either side; the top of the trunk door is attractively shaped and the clock rests on a double plinth.

It has a very good movement which is far more substantial than is usually seen at this period. The plates are tapering and have six heavy pillars; the wheel work has six crossings; adjustable end stops are provided throughout the train, except for the great wheel and the pallets are jewelled. Maintaining power is provided and the wood rod pendulum with truly massive bob some 8" in diameter is suspended from a heavy brass bar spanning both plates. The pulley to the brass cased weight is particularly delicately crossed out.

The 10" engraved and silvered brass dial is signed in the shallow breakarch by Archibald Johnston of London. There is a centre sweep minute hand, a large seconds ring and an aperture for the hours.

This is an excellent regulator, of good size with a fine case and movement.

Height: 6' 4" (193cms.)

Price band: F
