PHILLIPS, 23 COCKSPUR STREET, LONDON, NUMBER 1926. AN UNUSUAL ENGRAVED ENGLISH CARRIAGE TIMEPIECE. CIRCA 1860.

A very attractive engraved English carriage timepiece. The case surmounted by a carrying handle reminiscent of the styles used by James McCabe. In the four corners at the top are ball finials and there is a large viewing glass to look at the escapement. The clock has round pillars to the four corners with a solid rear door and solid sides and with a mask to the round enamel dial. The case is sparingly engraved with foliate scrolling and in a manner which gives the engraving a distinct 3D effect. This gives a particularly pleasing effect and is quite modern looking. The case stands on four knurled feet.

The eight day chain fusee movement is nicely signed for the retailers, ‘Phillips, 23 Cockspur Street, London’ and is numbered 1926. It has a large lever platform escapement mounted on the top and is of the finest quality.

The round enamel dial, also signed for the makers, has moon shaped hands with black Roman numerals.

Height to base of handle: 6˝" (17 cms.)

Price band: C

The retailers, Phillips Brothers, London, exhibited in the 1851 Exhibition but were first listed as watchmakers and jewellers at 31 Cockspur Street in 1839. They moved to 23 Cockspur Street in 1856. In addition to their own work they were known for selling work by other high quality English makers such as Thomas Cole.
